“The Grace Jones of jazz” – Gilles Peterson

Another new artist to me, and what just struck me was that voice, just sit back and take a listen, I can’t wait to hear more from this lady, but what a song to take on, A stirring interpretation of Nina Simone’s powerful civil rights anthem, the track is imbued with passion, enthusiasm and hope. This is the debut single from Los Angeles-based Lady Blackbird (aka Marley Munroe) which was realised in 2020.

Fruitless Fact: The Blackbird that Simone/ Lady Blackbird is referring to is a black woman. Throughout the 60s, Nina penned songs about black struggles in America.
