“Jazz music is the power of now. There is no script. It’s conversation. The emotion is given to you by musicians as they make split-second decisions to fulfil what they feel the moment requires.” Wynton Marsalis

Hello all

There are over 300 official releases of Miles Davis ‎– Kind Of Blue, which is frequently cited as the greatest jazz album of all time. A new version came out in 2021, on 200g, Clear, UHQR vinyl, Numbered, and limited to 25,000 copies, with a limit of 3 per customer per address. It will set you back $100, and postage to me would be $49.58, which works out in real money £110.

Would I like a copy, yer I would, but at the moment I am happy with my CD version. Jazz reissuing is big business, I have been watching a few videos on it, but what I have found there a lot of looking back in Jazz, I even heard one You Tuber state about a new album, if the album is not so many years old he would not consider it. Which I found very strange, if music is good to your ear, it’s good to your ear, it doesn’t matter if it was made in 1959 or 2021. Isn’t this the same with any music, as you can tell I don’t agree with the saying, ” Music was better in my day” pure bunkum? There that word again.

So continuing on from A Frankie View – Jazz Vibe 1 I am continuing my adventure into jazz, and one advantage I have is that it is all new to me, and I can decide what is good for me. So what have I been listening to jazz wise?

First of there was the last album in the 4 album boxset I have, Dave ‘Fathead’ Newman ‎‎– Fathead Comes On, with this album I started to notice some of it has started to sound the same to me, but I do really enjoy it when they slow it down a bit, like on the ballads. I just may not be a hard bop type of guy.

I have noticed is I do enjoy jazz when it is mixed with a bit of soul, Bryony Jarman-Pinto ‎– Cage and Aviary and Fish Factory Sessions EP are both good examples of this. I also really enjoy female jazz vocals and loved the cover of Nina Simone’s, by Lady Blackbird – Blackbird.

Another female lead album, Cécile McLorin Salvant ‎– WomanChild is another impressive listen, this lady has got such a range of tones to her voice. Diana Krall ‎– Only Trust Your Heart took me a bit of time to get into, and I am finding this with a few jazz albums, and maybe I should gain patience when it comes to jazz.

I haven’t given up on more instrumental jazz, as I did listen to Nick Finzer ‎– Exposition which was realised in 2013 and after a while, I started to get into the more uptempo songs.

Only two of the albums I have mentioned above were recorded in the last century, so from what I am hearing there is still some good jazz being made this century, but I am sure at one stage I will be heading for the year 1959.

Below is a 10 song playlist of what Jazz I have been listening to, and hopefully in the future, some more artists and types of Jazz will be added as I explore more.

I have also been putting together these playlists, I normally make up a playlist from a variety of different music genres and see if they fit together. So lately I have restricted myself to the albums I have posted about and have decided to share it with you, as we did in the old days with tapes

The only way I can think of sharing playlists these days is with something like Spotify.
