“Music brings a warm glow to my vision, thawing mind and muscle from their endless wintering.” – Haruki Murakami

Hello all

This week I heard the sad news of the death of two artists I have seen play live Brian Travers and Fritz McIntyre, then I got the news that Charlie Watts the drummer of the Rolling Stones had also died.

There has been a lot said and written this week about this week, and I love the story about when he punched Mick Jagger. Now I am not a massive Stones fan, I don’t actually own any of their albums, it’s not because I don’t like the Stones, it’s just when I go out record-buying there is always something else to buy. Anyway going off-topic here but as a non-rolling Stones fan, Charlie Watts always seemed this cool calm character, and from what I have seen he always made playing the drums look effortless, RIP Charlie Watts.

I wrote about Brian Travers in my post A Frankie View – Reggae Vibe 6, and on how listening to his saxophone playing as a young teenager, and how that, has become a big influence on what I listen today. RIP Brian Travers.

Fritz McIntyre was the keyboard player in the original line-up of Simply Red, he was in the band from their debut album Picture Book in 1985 until their 1995 album Life. I went to see Simply Red during the Stars tour about 1995, my wife was more of a fan than me, and she was meant to go with a friend who in the end could not make it, so I ended up going. They surprised me and put on a very good gig, so much so I went to see again with the wife for the Life tour. The last song on the Stars album, “Wonderland” is a song I have always enjoyed, and Fritz McIntyre shares lead vocals with Mick Hucknall, I did try and find a live version featuring Fritz McIntyre but couldn’t, but when they did this live, it just created a wonderful atmosphere in Wembly Arena with just the two of them on the stage. RIP Fritz McIntyre

The story that Spencer Elden is suing Nirvana for sexual exploitation has confused me a bit. We have all seen the cover that depicts Elden as a four-month-old in a swimming pool, grasping for a dollar bill that’s being dangled in front of him on a fishing line. Now 30, Elden says his parents never signed a release authorising the use of his image on the album.

He also alleges the nude image constitutes child pornography.

“The images exposed Spencer’s intimate body part and lasciviously displayed Spencer’s genitals from the time he was an infant to the present day,” legal papers filed in California claim.  Elden’s lawyer, Robert Y. Lewis, argues that the inclusion of the dollar bill (which was superimposed after the photograph was taken) makes the minor seem “like a sex worker”.

Elden alleges his “true identity and legal name are forever tied to the commercial sexual exploitation he experienced as a minor which has been distributed and sold worldwide from the time he was a baby to the present day”.

He claims he “has suffered and will continue to suffer lifelong damages” as a result of the artwork, including “extreme and permanent emotional distress” as well as “interference with his normal development and educational progress” and “medical and psychological treatment”.

Now, this is the bit I don’t understand 5 years ago, for Nevermind’s 25th anniversary Spencer Elden remade the picture, but this time with his clothes on, but at the time he said, “I said to the photographer, ‘Let’s do it naked.’ But he thought that would be weird, so I wore my swim shorts,”

Confused I am, choice of covers below.

This week music listening started off on a Sunday afternoon, I got back from taking my mum food shopping, it was time for some lunch, a bit of peppered beef, toms, and mayo in a roll washed down with some ginger beer, and my choice of listening was Coldplay ‎– X&Y on CD. I dropped the CD case, and then stepped on it, picked it up and said I will have to ” Fix you”

Monday and Tuesday night, after hearing about the death of Brian Travers, I decided to listen to some instrumental Reggae/Dub with horn sections, from the likes of AMJ Dub Collective, Burning Spear, Elroy Bailey, Joe Gibbs & The Professionals, Rico, The Gyrators and UB40, I shared my playlist in A Frankie View – Reggae Vibe 6.

Midweek I enjoyed some new remix of Bryony Jarman-Pinto – Sour Face: dego & 2000Black Remixes, and took my vinyl version of Joe Gibbs & The Professionals ‎– African Dub – All Mighty for a spin on the turntable.

Had two days off this week, but still got up normal time, and spent one morning listening to The Clash ‎– Give ‘Em Enough Rope, a bit of a wake-up call that time of the morning.

Now that things have opened up, we had a barbecue around my house, and in this day and age, a Spotify account, blue tooth speaker and you have access to millions of songs. One thing I have also learnt, you could nuke a vegetation sausage and it still will not change colour.

Like to thank, Sue, Pete, Fiona, Eleanor, Shauna, Harry, Ayeesha, little Kairo and all my daughter mates for coming and making a great day. With no real social interaction over the last 18 months, it was also nice to get some feedback that there are people out there reading my ramblings.

Steve For The Deaf is doing an Aerosmith week, a band I don’t know a lot about, he also shared a great clip of The Blue Meanies in Helter Skelter Aerosmith. The Press Music reviews wrote an interesting piece on Guitarist Adrian Belew in Adrian Belew Meets David Bowie.

Loving the Music for a while now has been pointing great bands that I have never heard and he has done it again with Fat Freddy’s Drop in Wairunga – Fat Freddy’s Drop – So Slick.

Well, that’s it from me this week stay safe all, and have a good week all.

Oh, I have been listening to this on my daily commute.

I have always been putting together these playlists, I normally make up a playlist from a variety of different music genres and see if they fit together. So lately I have restricted myself to the albums I have posted about and have decided to share them with you, as we did in the old days with tapes

The only way I can think of sharing playlists these days is with something like Spotify, so above is some of what I have been listening to this week.
