“Rock music was never written for or performed for conservative tastes.” Frank Zappa

Hello all

If someone asked me was I into rock music, I would say no, but would I be telling the truth.

I was reading an article called “The 100 most popular rock bands of all time”, I counted 17 bands that I can say I like, some I have never even heard like Five Finger Death Punch, WHO! are they?, and since when did Gorillaz, become a Rock group.

According to Discog, the first album I ever brought, The Specials – The Specials falls into the Rock, Reggae Genre, we use to call it Ska, but it did have a touch of punk in it.

The first real rock groups I would say I got into was maybe The Jam, quickly followed by The Cure, but these bands are mostly classed as Post-Punk bands, and many years ago I would not have called these rock groups.

So what is Rock, well according to Wikipedia, Rock music is a genre of popular music that originated as “rock and roll” in the United States in the 1950s, and developed into a range of different styles in the 1960s and later, particularly in the United Kingdom and the United States. It has its roots in the 1940s’ and 1950s’ rock and roll, itself heavily influenced by rhythm and blues and country music. Rock music also drew strongly on a number of other genres such as blues and folk and incorporated influences from jazz, classical and other musical sources.

So Rock has got a mix of everything really. But there is some form of rock that I do struggle with, Heavy Metal is just not for me, I am just not the sort of “Five Finger Death Punch” type of guy, and being an electrician I know what AC DC is, and sorry all you Kiss fans, just never really done it for me.

So what do I like now, well of late, I have been listening to what they are now calling Alternative Rock, groups like The Cure, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Alanis Morissette and Coldplay.

I also enjoy the slowing quieter rock, which is label either Soft Rock or Folk Rock, with artist such as Suzanne Vega, Donavon Frankenreiter and Damien Rice

One of the newer forms I have started to listen to is Americans or Country Rock, with artist like John Salvage, VK Lynne and Lydia Luce. But these two genre of Rock do blend into each other.

Now that I am started to reach my mid 50’s, I have started to listen to Punk, and have started with two great bands so far, The Clash and The Stranglers, and at the weekend I am going to see Dirt Royal, who are a Punk/Mod group, who I am looking forward to seeing.

I don’t own any Beatles, Rolling Stones or even David Bowie or Queen albums, what I would call Classic Rock groups. I sort of like these artist from afar, and I know so many of there songs, I may dip my toe in one day.

I have also been putting together these playlists, I normally make up a playlist from a variety of different music genres and see if they fit together. So lately I have restricted myself to the albums I have posted about and have decided to share them with you, as we did in the old days with tapes

The only way I can think of sharing playlists these days is with something like Spotify.
